WHEN?
After framing, installing plumbing, and installing electrical wiring is the best time to
install low voltage wiring in a new construction.
WHERE?
The structured cabling enclosure will have a cable running to it from a
demarcation point, usually on the side of the building. Cable, internet, and telephone
wires run from either a local transformer or electrical pole. From there, the wires run
underground, through the demarcation point, and into the structured cabling enclosure.
From there, low voltage wiring will run from a patch panel inside of the enclosure to
every room and desired locations.
Fiber-optic and coax cable are typical options for internet and TV service across
the country. Fiber is faster. Fiber speeds typically range from 250 Mbps to 1,000 Mbps. It
would take you less than 10 seconds to download a two-hour movie.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has estimated that only about
14% of the U.S. can access fiber-optic speeds of 1,000 Mbps or more. By the same
measure, cable internet has 88% nationwide coverage at speeds of 25 Mbps or more.
It is important to talk with the local service provider to determine what cable
is being delivered to the home or business first
